In 1992, a book by Henri Lefebvre was published called Rhythmanalysis. Rhythmanalysis is the study of rhythms that shape human experience in timespace and pervade everyday life and place. Rhythms are micro such as the time of bus services or more structural such as changes in temperature. We wish to study the ecology of the city, that is, to understand the city as a living breathing organism, to understand and express the counterpoint of rhythms that make up the experience of living inside a city.“So much happened here—World War II, the ghetto, the uprising and everything after. We live with ghosts in Warsaw, but it’s a very special place with wonderful, talented, creative people. Now it’s time to get rid of the ghosts, make our peace with the past, and think about the future.”- Bogna Swiatkowska. In the context of Lebefvre’s Rhythmanalysis, we’re interested in Warsaw because of it’s aspirations, it’s architecture and need to be taken as an important European city, as well as it’s history. In Warsaw, can we feel the pulsations of history amongst the city’s cosmopolitan image. How do the temporal rhythms of everyday life, Warsaw’s social, urban and natural landscape influence our physiology? Does the character of a city like Warsaw, a city that breathes, have an effect on our existence and are we just too busy to realise just how profound it is?
